I have a 300 with a serial number that falls between those two years. You guys want pictures if it helps narrow the gap?

UncleRonny,
Wallace's Mitchell 300 dating chart only included the Mitchell 300 reels that he, personally, had access to. He states that "These gaps in serial numbers could be the year before or after my best estimate", so yours could have been produced either in 1959, or 1960.
As far as I know, nobody has broken down production serial numbers down any further than what Wallace has. :)

Regards,
Ted Lanham

Thanks Ted,
I only recently saw that the serial numbers in the guide end and start non sequentially. I suppose it's time for me to invest in a copy of Wallace's book since I'm over a half dozen of these older 300's.

UncleRonny,
His book is great for information on the 300s. I believe the dating chart in the book and in the MRM are the same,

Dear Ted and Ronny,

There is a way to determine if your reel is from 1959 or 1960. To do this you would have to determine what exactly changed on the reels between 1959 and 1960. Then compare your reel with both before and after and match it with one or the other. The one that you’re trying to date will match one, that being your reels date of manufacture. Did that make since?

I always find it funny that anyone would want a closer date because I’m old school. When I first started my studies on the Mitchell 300 Reals in 1999, the serial numbers meant nothing and you were lucky to determine what decade a Mitchell reel was made in. For this reason alone I started my study on serial numbers.

My first study was released in 2004 called “Mitchell, Rebirth of a Legend.” I was attacked by at least half of the known Mitchell collectors. By the time my current book was first published, it was getting more and more approval. I believe now after all these years my dating guide has been accepted by all collectors.

Sorry my friends, I’m rambling. 🤒

Best regards, Wallace

I have 2-1960 300s that I am willing to trade or sell to someone looking for that particular year? I bought 300s until I found my birth year 63'.Last year I got my 1st cousin one for his birth year 62' and these 2 are just sitting in my closet. My go to is my 63' 308 and have 2- 304s as well. I will post in the
for sale section as well. I have been trying to join this site for awhile now and finally got in!
