Mitcheell reel no 300 on it

Post by Grahamwin »

Hi Mitchell Mates I have a full bail Mitchell 300 size reel, it does not have the 300 inscribed after the word Mitchell which is inscribed on the handle side plate and it has the boomerang anti-reverse lever and a non roller line full bail. On the opposite side plate it has the serial number 401598. Can any one inform me what version and the year of manufacture ?
Hoping you can help Grahamwin

Hello Gramwin,

Sounds like it could be an early full bail reel before 300 was added or it might be a parts reel. If you could it would be great if you can post some photos of your reel. Please look for a serial number that should be present on the back of the reel. Slight possibility it could be on the inside of the reel seat.
Kind Regards, Scott

Grahamwin,
Your reel dates to circa 1954 and that would make it a 4th version.

As Bill has said, a fourth version reel from before the 300 identification was given to it.

These are the first full bail production reels with just some pilot or prototype reels preceding them.

I would expect it to have a notch on the bail arm, not a slot, and a serrated bail release/ lock to engage it.

These reels often have some really high quality gears inside and just occasionally a nylon transfer gear.

There were a few things in transition at this time and a number of spares available to convert between a half bail and a full bail, crosswind gears to replace level wind ones and longer handles and stiffer spool backs.

As far as I am aware only the gears were available outside the USA, as this was all arranged for Garcia the US importer who really were providing an exemplary service to their customers.

Easily my favourite of all the Mitchell reels.

Thanks - Bailarm for your reply and info, yes the reel does have the notch on the bail arm, not a slot like the later Mitchell 300, and it has the serrated bail release lock to engage it. So i am fairly certain that it is a genuine 4th version and the serial number seems to confirm this. I have not yet examined the inside of the reel but no doubt new grease and lube will be required.
I did not realize that these early Mitchells had better and high quality gears inside.
I have been using a Mitchell 300A double red band reel for most of my float and feeder fishing, and I must admit that these later 300A Mitchell are nice and appear to be very usable reels.

Hi All. Do members think this is the true 4th version?

Gramhamwin,
We can give you a better evaluation with more and better photos. I suggest you first remove the spool spindle which is still on the reel (in the photo) by pressing the button in the center of the spindle axle. If it does not move, try putting a few drops of penetrating oil on it and see if that helps loosen it up. If the button will not go in, then the spindle will remain locked on the reel axle and you will have to go through a separate procedure to remove it.
Photograph the reel laying on it's side with the handle facing up and get as close as you can while still capturing the entire reel. Flip it over and photograph it on the opposite side. Carefully remove the three cover plate screws and lift off the cover. Photograph the inside of the cover plate, the inside of the housing, and if possible the baffle plate which is located behind the spool, assuming you were able to get it off.
We will be looking forward to seeing your photos.
Kind Regards,
Bill :D
