Lubrication
Lubrication
Is The Mitchell Reel supposed to be primarily lubed with oil only? The lube ports don't seem to offer very much access for a substance as thick as grease. I mostly collect old spin-cast reels that are frozen and so are acquired for a reasonable price. Most of these reels are full of dried grease and once cleaned they're back on track very quickly. I'm new to Mitchells and would benefit greatly from your experiences with lubrication and service intervals.

Yeah, don, He'll be fine once you feed him..............hope I'm not on the menu
Baron,
I think you may have discovered from reading the Lubrication, Cleaning etc. thread that the lubrication port is somewhat useless. it was to add oil to the old style greases used in the early days. The synthetic greases of today make the concept obsolete. The only place i use oil is on the bail pivots and the bail spring. i like a thicker oil that will stick to the spring and prevent corrosion. Usually I use an aerosol oil. i am not a fan of WD40 for lubrication.
Best wishes to all

Re: Lubrication
I will only use WD-40 for roadwork style loosening and that rarely. I will read the post Don referred to and perhaps take up this post again. Isn't it fun having all this free info to choose from?
