300 half bail restore
300 half bail restore
Most here know I'm into saving Mitchell UL reels. Some time ago I made the mistake of posting a restore, not knowing restore was back to orgnial. So I actually only save crusty old reels, repair and paint.
I have a friend that does do restores (on a lot of different reels), but has a love for Mitchells.
So this summer I picked up a 300 half bail in good condition, just because I didn't have one. I am going to be leaving all my fishing stuff (from reels, rod building, and tackle airbrushing) to my grandson.
So I had Christian from Pop's tackle box do this restore. Check him out on Facebook.

Re: 300 half bail restore
Yes, beautiful result.
I had a go at a restoration a while back, and all was fine until I tried to clear the paint from the 'Mitchell' etching, and small pieces of paint cracked and chipped off ether side of the etched groove (I used a needle to try to get it started), so back to the drawing board.
I would love to know how this 'should' be done, but I may ask an expert to do the job for me.

Hi Rockape.
I'm Christian, I restored the reel in the photos. I'd be happy to help you out.

Re: 300 half bail restore
Sorry for my late reply Christian.
Can't seem to find how to set up thread posting alerts, so I don't miss any relevant additions.
That is really kind of you to offer your restoration skills (and you certainly are a very skilled restorer).
I'm not sure yet whether to have any of my hslf bails restored as they are in reasonably good condition. The reel I tried (and failed miserably) to restore has now ended up in the parts bin (a 1975 301), but I will definitely take you up on your offer when the right one comes along, thank you.
I have to say that during my short membership on this great forum, I have found the members here to be extremely kind, friendly and very generous to fellow enthusists like myself, so thank you to all of you.

It won't be long till he will be tramping around in the trout streams with you. Keep him away from cellphones.

Ted

Re: 300 half bail restore
I know right!! I have 2 other grandsons. One is 8 and I can just about talk to him, everything he talks about is technology. Though he is my guy to get help with my phone and computer. The other is 3 and is autistic, hopefully down the road fishing will be his outlet. This one has woods out the back door. We'll have him out in nature lickety split.Ted Lanham wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 2:02 pm don309,
