Saved reels
Saved reels
The reels are a 406, and two 308'S. The purple was for my daughter, and camo for my grandson. I did forget to take a before picture of my grandsons reel.

Re: Saved reels
Nice work! Elbow Grease or some magic potion to get that paint off so thoroughly?
}<)))'> Bailarm
Re: Saved reels
Bailarm, actually the 1st one took forever! So I tried my grinding wheel with a soft steel brush. It now takes me about an hour and a half, to remove paint. I get some minor scratches, that primer and paint fill.

Re: Saved reels
Getting more use out of your air brush. Did you have to paint the rotor head of that 406? Not sure what that crusty stuff was. Looks great.
Re: Saved reels
linewinder , yes the rotor was painted. It was saltwater corrosion, but didn't hurt the integrity of the metal. I think I'll paint this one with dupli-color car paint, and see if I can come close to the Mitchell color blue. Even though the color of this reel is black, we'll see . The only airbrushing I've been doing is crank baits.

Re: Saved reels
Sorry mates, this is a test post. I'm trying to get PDF files to post as attachments. From what I see, they will upload, but won't show the attachments. I think we will have to download them to our computers to see what's there. Is this going to be a problem?

Re: Saved reels
Hey LindWinder, Thank you for trying to help. I've read what you sent and a lot more and the bottom line is; it will not show in the window unless you're willing to do code which is dangerous plus I'm not qualified. If you do make a coding change, that pretty much rules out any phpBB help cause it could mess up in any future updates. I just can't win for losing. Kindest Regards, Wallace
Re: Saved reels
Hi as far as stripping paint off these old Mitchell's goes I had very good success with pulling them completely apart and burning the paint off in a fire. Sounds a bit brutal but it worked . Cheers

Re: Saved reels
I’d be concerned about warping if not melting the metal. Keep in mind internal to the frame in these reels is a half sleeve of steel, which expands differently than aluminum when heated. Glad it worked though.
Re: Saved reels
Cured this paint, by baking. 250 degrees for about 2 - 21/2 hrs. Weber grill.

Re: Saved reels
Hi Linewinder yes I had reservations to I didn't use Furness type heat just open flame style as you would cooking a bbq .I have an old 489 that could do with a facelift so I will photograph the process when I get time and see how it goes this time. Cheers.
