When I was young, my dad presented me with two new Mitchell-Garcia rod/reel combos, a 510 and 410. I've used the rods and reels for well over 50 years. Last year I took the 510 with me to Canada and landed dozens of 8-14 pound Northern pike. An angler at the camp looked at my gear and told me how rare my 510 rod and reel combo was and suggested that I retire the gear so that I didn't break either the rod or reel. (Both combos are in very good condition, and all original.)
While searching the internet, I was able to find a few 510 reels on the market, and a Mitchell Garcia flyer for the 510 & 508. However, the only information I can find on the Mitchell Garcia 410 reels have the traditional reel mount, rather than the fork. I've attached a photo of my 410 rod base and reel. The handle and knob on the pictured 410 has been switched with my 510, as I prefer the flat knob rather than the torpedo style when fishing.
How do I determine the age and value of my 510 and 410 combo sets?
Thanks.

CA, someone switched the cover on your forked foot reel. It should have a 510-side plate not a 410-side plate. Both are interchangeable. The serial number is stamped on the outer rim of the forked foot reel. I can see it cover plate side between the 2 brass seats. They were made between 1969 & 1971. Approx 41,307. Hope this helps.

Re: Micthell Garcia 410 Rod and Reel
Kim,
Thanks for the information. You're right, it is a 510 (5 +revolutions of the bail to one crank of the handle.) I'm sure my dad and I never removed the cover and replaced it with a 410 cover, as we were never that sophisticated when cleaning reels. I'm wondering if the reel came that way from the factory in France.
I looked all over the outside of the reel and still don't see the serial number. I guess it is irrelevant now that you told me the years the reels were manufactured.
Best wishes.

ColoradoAngler,
May we see a photo of both of your outfits? Perhaps we can offer a few suggestions that will help.
Kind Regards,
Bill

Here is a 2-page ad from the Garcia Annual 1970 showing what the 510 rod and reel looked like and gives some information.
