Age of 302 reel?

Post by Sea Hunter »

I recently acquired a 302 reel. The serial number on the foot is 0940368. This forum indicates that 302's (full bail) were built between 1953 and 1977. My serial number put his reel in the 1955 timeframe however, it conforms to the post 1969 parts diagram. If the "0" (zero) was an "O" (letter) then the reel would be in the 1984 timeframe. The 0 (zero) at beginning of the serial number looks identical to the 0 (zero) in the serial number. Upon some minor cleaning, it looks new.

It appears from the pre1969 parts diagram for the 302 uses centering ring PN 81 355 known as a Chrome centering ring or Shaft bearing pinion cap. I appears that post 1969 the reel uses a centering bushing made of black plastic (same part number ) that looks like a water deflector shield. My reel has the black plastic shield. I purchased the chrome centering ring however, both cannot be installed. I think the black plastic bushing/shield is an indicator that my reel may have been manufactured after 1969. However, as indicated above, the serial number/dating is confusing.

That serial number is not from the ‘50s. Later ‘60s makes sense. I’ll check my records when I get home from vacation. The 0 was added at the front to prepare stamping for the eventuality of one million reels. Other characteristics would indicate production era. Photos are best.
