Looking for 300x part

Post by Calcagni3 »

Hello. I am new to the group and I figured this would be the place to ask about a specific part I'm in search of. I normally use an old 300 that my dad used for years or a 350 that my grandfather got in the late 50s or early 60s and was used a lot by him and my dad. I wanted to give this 300x a try as well, but it was not working properly. I managed to identify which part is broken, although I'm not exactly sure what it is called. I have a picture of it on the 300x schematic. Its part number 9182479 that I'm looking for. Couldn't seem to find it online anywhere so I figured this would be the place to ask. Also curious to know if anyone here has ever used the 300x? Seems like a pretty nice reel.

Calcagni3, Welcome to the Mitchell Reel Museum Forum! :text-welcomeconfetti:

Regarding your question regarding a part for a Mitchell 300X reel. As far as I am aware, Mitchell did not make a reel model called the 300X. This is somewhat confusing as Mitchell did make a kit called the 300X but the kit came with a Mitchell 300 model reel. Wallace Carney notes in his book: The Mitchell Classic 300 Spinning Reel, that the kit included: "...two Garcia Platyl pre-wound spools, a spare spool container, a tube of Garcia grease, and a reel tool." in addition to a Mitchell Model 300 spinning reel.
I do not recognize the reel shown in your schematic and the part numbers do not appear to be Mitchell part numbers. Could this possibly be a reel made by another manufacturer?
Sorry I could not be of any more help.
Kind Regards,
Bill :D

Bill,
The reel in question is for the newer Mitchell, not the ones we study/discuss here. After Pure Fishing bought them out. The parts are available if you need them. Probably Dick J or other sellers with large volume of parts. Possibly the "BAY".

Calcagni3, not sure if you had typed in that part number and do a search that way. I did a quick search for a picture of a 300X. I believe I have that reel minus the spool in my basement. The trouble would be to locate it before selling it. Would be all or nothing as I normally don't collect them. It does reel very smooth though.

Thanks Kim,
Another "In Name Only" Mitchell Reel, no wonder I didn't recognize it. So many fishermen believe their reels were made by Mitchell when they are not. I wish we could somehow let people know that there are reels made by the Mitchell company which was located in France and then there are reels that are made by company's that call their reels Mitchell because the name/brand Mitchell was sold after Mitchell went out of business so other company's can use the name and put it on their reels only to fool would be buyers. :text-imsorry:

Kind Regards,
Bill

No problem, Bill. Many companies are bought out and the name stays due to popularity. The only way to let them know is replying to their questions on this site. That's how they will learn the difference. Wallace had a discussion of the/a Mitchell reel that was newly released in limited quantities. Along the discussion people were posting their 300 reels and asking questions. The 300X I have is a very smooth reel. I'm a purist to most parts and would let my wife fish with it but I wouldn't. No spool and didn't want to spend money on a new one. Put it for sale a few years ago. Not sure if it was sold or not. Would take 1/2 hour to determine if I did. Too much other things before that.

Thanks for the info everyone. I am well aware it is more modern Mitchell, therefore it is not a "legit" Mitchell. It just happens to be a reel I found that that looks solid, but has that one broken part. I was going to use it this year if I could find that part.

I'll probably just end up tossing it to the side since I already fixed up another reel to use this year in it's place. It was gonna be used for a pole I normally put nightcrawlers on with some weight for catfish/whatever else bites. I figured I'd use a reel like that since there is always the risk of a large catfish or Drum yanking my entire set-up into the water if I'm standing a little too far away throwing soft baits. I would never use my good 300 or 350 for something like that because that would be a devastating blow
