Mitchell 301 C – 1969-1985 = 30,695 Units
First Version Garcia Mitchell 300C with serial number 7469840 dates this reel 1968, the first year of production. Made in France as an upgraded 300 series reel incorporating ball bearings; it was marketed mainly in The USA by Garcia. The one shown is complete with the original box with matching serial numbers and unusual paperwork. As you see, the paperwork included a 300C supplement to the 300 series owner’s manual which is basically the same reel except for the bearings. The anti-reverse lever was too big and would hit the upper and lower housing.
Advertising for the “C” series is very rare so any information is hard
to come by! We do know the second version and the LH 301C was released
in the early seventies.
The second version serial number F342312 from 1976 incorporated a couple improvements including the anti-reverse lever being reduced in size and the
new bail wire with a roller line guide. Also note the new style box. In the mid-seventies, Mitchell
stopped placing serial numbers on their boxes. The Garcia Mitchell 301C shown with serial number G116101 dates this reel 1977, probably the last year of production for the Garcia Mitchell 300/301C. During "transition" periods, Mitchell would use up old stock including in this case, the plastic left hand model clam-shell box.
The last Mitchell 300C shown below was made by Mitchell long after Garcia's involvement beginning in the mid 1980s. The serial number Q.5,07 dates this particular reel made in France circa 1985. You should note these last models are just the 300A/301A with a different name plate (Badge) and without the red information band around the rotor. The other feature that's different is the black cover plate to housing gasket as apposed to red on the "A" series.
