206 / 207 - 206 S / 207 S
Mitchell 206 / 206 S – 1973-1986 = 751,023 Units
Mitchell 207 / 207 S – 1973-1986 = 30, 416 Units
The 1974 Garcia Mitchell 206 below (206 1 - 206 4) is the first version prior to Garcia's departure in 1978. A transitional reel is shown (pictures 206 5 & 206 6) from the collection of Roy Allett. Garcia's name is no longer engraved but Mitchell continued using up old stock cover plates with Garcia's name. A Browning 1979 release is also shown (206 S 1 & 206 S 2) but they now have the letter "S" suffix as you can see.
We are missing pictures of the black Mitchell Sports 206 S with box and the Browning box!
In comparing the previous releases; the "S" in this case seams to stand for "Saltwater" proof as did the Mitchell 304 S. Upgrades to the 206 S include a new Rotating Head, Bail Wire and Mount, Spool Drag Knob and Anti-Reverse Lever. All of these improvements made the "S" series reel more durable and corrosion resistant but why did they drop the Spool Chenille felt lining PN 82175?
Below are the first two known schematics of both releases we have found so far; more can be seen in our Schematics Gallery. You'll also see a 200 Series Specification chart from a 1977 advertisement and another from 1981 on the 200 S Series. Other advertisement photographs are also shown to help as a visual aid in identification including the missing Mitchell Sports 206 S.
