In 1951 Garcia started advertising an artist’s rendition of a Mitchell Salt Water half bail with a 2-screw Cover Plate. In 1952 the Mitchell 300 series was now offered with a full bail and in 1953 this Salt Water quickly changed to a full bail as seen in the 3rd picture, the first known Mitchell Salt Water schematic.
The first 2 photographs are from an unpublished 1952 Garcia tackle catalog. The artist rendition on page one again shows the two-screw Cover Plate some believe was the first version but in the next page it shows this reel in a box with a four-screw Cover Plate. Note the box tray is another artist’s rendition with the “Mitchell Salt Water” on the top-left, similar to The Mitchell (300) box. The true first version box is shown below.
