In the mid eighties Mitchell Sports France started making several “Special” version reels such as the Mitchell 408G Gold and the Mitchell 400G Gold reels as shown here. They came in the wood presentation boxes and in a standard 400 Box as shown with a “Gold” sticker. In addition to each reel having a three digit issue number, serial numbers were also placed on the foot of these reels. You will also find other differences such as the handle knob screw.
The problem we're having right now is trying to determine what releases were placed in which box!? Also, the first five pictures is a duplicate 400G marked “037” of the other 037 we’re showing but this one has no serial number on the foot. It was purchased as is, without any box. It was common practice for Mitchell Sports to make reels in the late eighties from new old stocked parts but why did they use the same number?
The 408G and 400G is an ongoing study. How many of each were actually made is currently unknown. Both are very rare and valuable especially ones with serial numbers and in the wood box.
