Mitchell 408 – 1963-1986 = 578,098 Units (Also shows mystery 408 - 1984 = 5,662 Units)
Mitchell 409 – 1963-1980 = 55,133 Units

Originally painted a dark-rich Midnight Blue with 5.5:1 high-speed gear ratio and Planomatic gearing; the 408 was an high speed upgrade of the first ultra-light 308 series.

The 1st pictures with serial number 293840 shows a fine example of a Garcia distributed 1st version Mitchell 408 from the collection of Mike DiMattio. This series reel was called an “Ultra-Light” also known as the “Ultra-Sport”, the serial number and packaging dates this reel back to the early-sixties, 1962/63. These 1st versions did not have chrome “Dust Caps” between the handle and shaft where it screws into the main drive gear.

The next pictures with serial number 575374 shows a great example of a Garcia Mitchell 2nd version. From the serial number and Matching Serial Number Box; this reel was Made in France in the mid-sixties. The 2nd version was also released in a plastic black top / red bottom, yellow tray "clam-shell" box circa 1967. The pictures with serial number G108204 was made in 1977 marking the last of the 408 painted Midnight Blue.

The next set of pictures with serial number H072783 shows the new Sky Blue version Mitchell started making in 1978. It was also during this time the new one-piece box with a card insert began. This same box could be used with a variety of models. These reels also came with gray plastic handle and drag adjustment knobs with blue "High Speed" stickers on the handle's axis.

Thanks to our Mitchell Mate, Roy Allett, the last images show a Mitchell 408 from the mid-1980s that were changed to black paint. Mitchell started making several unique 400 series models in the mid 1980s including a Mitchell 400, Mitchell 400 S, Mitchell 408 G, Mitchell 408 S and this one shown, the Mitchell 408. The serial numbers on all of these models are very confusing!
