Line weight for 308?

Post by Schrack »

What is max. Line weight you use on a 308?
My most efficient is 6# ?
Any one go higher?
Tried 12, what a mess, cut cast distance, caused weird tangles, got wrapped around spool cause birds nest.
Guess 6# is most efficient
Need some feedback.

With Mono, I've used 4, 6 & 8. Anything more is too heavy to cast well.
For Braid I've used 8, 10 & 12 with good success.
I think it has a lot to do with line Diameter e.g. I have some Vicious brand 30 lb braid that is smaller in diameter than 8 lb Trilene XL
(Trilene XL measures .0100" to the Vicious diameter of .0094")

Another thought... Look to balance the line with the pole. I would not want to have a line that over-stresses to pole while casting or fighting a fish.
My true ultralight poles recommend 2-6 lb line whereas my light action recommends 4-8 lb line. Each rod maker has slightly different recommendations. Be aware that this is only my thoughts and opinions, I do not claim to be an expert by no shape of the imagination.
