I have a 400 that is blue in color with no serial number that I can find anywhere. It also has a black spool which I'm guessing someone used it( unless they came with a black spool ). It also has a red Garcia sticker prior to the Mitchell name and also a red sticker on the handle that says "High Speed". I'm curious when or if they stopped using serial numbers on the 400, trying to find out what year it might be, Thanks

jlslavey,
One possibility is that a reel body that has been bought as a replacement for the original, has no serial number. Sometimes, those serial numbers are just are hard to see.

Ted Lanham

As Ted said, it could be a replacement body. I have had several
Mitchells that were stamped so lightly, and had a little wear so the numbers were impossible to read.
All of that version of 400 should have a serial number on the reel foot, and they came with a black spool.
