I was given my dads Mitchell 300 and was wondering if the number stamped on the side plate is the serial number
(582185). I was told he bought it in the 1950's

Hello Jeff1322,
Sorry no one has gotten to your question. I think your post slipped through the cracks and I do apologize. :sFun_bricks: \

Regarding your reel, yes it does indeed sound like that is the serial number stamped on the housing.

The serial number 582185 would date your reel to about 1954 and would make it what we call here at the Mitchell Reel Museum, a 4th Version Mitchell. :clap

The 4th version Mitchell reels were the first Models to have a full bail and are one of my favorite Models. You'll note that there is the word Mitchell written in script and engraved on the cover plate but no number 300. That didn't happen until about 1955.

Kind Regards,
Bill :tup

The serial # is 582185 but the cover plate has the Mitchel 3-0-0 engraved on it!

Hi jeff1322 , Could be a late 54 or early 55 where they were already using the covers with 3-0-0 on it. It could also be that for some reason your dad changed the cover somewhere along the line. There are a lot of unknowns in the realm of mitchell reels , new facts are always coming to light. Regards, John in Pa. :sCh_fisherman:
