Vintage Mitchell 308

Post by richie7799us »

I am a new member. I would like some help on a Mitchell 308 I am trying to clean, rebuild and lube. The reel has one issue that I can not figure out. When the anti reverse is engaged and I reel in the line, it does not make that clicking noise. What is wrong? I like that soound to remind me the anti reverse is on Thank you.

Good Day,

Some Mitchells had a "Silent Anti-reverse" feature. I don't know if this applies to your particular reel, or even to a 308 model. If you have a Taiwan made one, it may likely have it.

Others can chime in and correct me if i am incorrect on this.

The 308 is a fine reel, especially for trout using 4 or 6 pound test line.

Have a good day.

I think you can look into 3 things. Is the anti reverse (A/R) spring in correctly it goes in front of the dog (photo attached)? Maybe the spring tension holding it back. Or it could be a worn dog.
Hope this helps,
Don

Hi Richie and :text-welcomewave: to MRM!

You've received a couple ideas so far. The most common reason I've found for this, particularly if you have not completely taken apart the reel and cleaned all the old grease out, is just that, the old grease may have lost it's viscosity and hardened, causing the A/R dog to be frozen. its an easy fix...just take it a apart, clean with WD40 and lightly grease with a synthetic grease. You mention you are trying to clean and re-lube. have you done this yet? if you take the back plate off and shoot some photos of the area, we may be able to tell you what your problem is just from a photo.

What is the serial number from the bottom of the foot?

To everyone, thank you for your help.
I retired 3 years ago and got bored so I am now fishing and refurbishing vintage Mitchell spinning reels.
I am now working on (8) 308's. Where is a good place to get parts at a fair price for the 308's
Once again, thank you so much for your help.
Richie
