Post subject:  custom Narmco Conolon Citation 8300-N

Hello I would like you to see this Rod I have had for 15 years. It also came with a 300D L Mitchell reel in wooden box but no outer cardboard box. I have checked several 1950s Conolon catalogs but no number such exists. This appears to be Airflite pole line that was custom made because of 6000 numbers in the catalogs. The color is also different from poles of that era. Gold eyelids too.

Kim,

6300 was in the 1955 Narmco Conolon Catalog as a rod and a kit (which could be a candidate for your custom, assuming the tube number was appropriate for the rod - is it a 6-footer with reinforced butt section?). Although I see 6300 series numbers such as 6301 later, not specifically the 6300. I don't have a copy of '54, so I can't say about that.

See 1955 Catalog excerpts below.

P.S. I do need to clarify that this is not a distance casting rod, the topic of this thread.

Thanks John,
Was hesitant on this due the topic matter. I focused on custom and took it from there. If the MODS want to place this elsewhere then do it. Thanks again. Will get more pics of the pole and use a different thread.

By the way, after looking at the available rods John showed that were light in color mine is darker in color which would be custom made???????

Hey Kim,

Did you see my question above about your rod:
Quote:
... is it a 6-footer with reinforced butt section?

That’s what Airflite 6300-6R is.

In regard to color of a natural finish (“N”) rod, from my reading it’s that darkness is related to sunlight exposure over time – the more sunlight the darker the rod is. A vintage rod initially can be as light as a “honey” color, but over time can become a dark “tobacco” color with sunlight exposure.

Conolon did not develop Conolon Color, UV-resistant baked-in resin, until 1956. Conolock, finish bound to resin (also UV protective), came in 1958. So presumably, Conolon rods from 1956 on would not have darkened as easily as earlier rods.

In regard to the 1955 Catalog's Airflite rod illustration, the coloration is inconsistent. The top section appears to be medium tobacco, while the butt section is light yellow. So, I don't know how reliable that is for comparison.

Kim,

The Missilite tags on your rod would mean it’s from 1958-59, as that’s when Narmco made/sold Missilite rods.

I wondered if your "6300" could actually be "8300." So, I did an inverse, with enhanced contrast, of your cap image. Looks like 8300 indeed. See edited image below.

You messaged me your rod was 7’. The Citation 8300-N, sold in 1958/59 was 7' with natural finish (aluminum tube included). It had a Missilite blank. See attached images excerpted from the 1958 Narmco Conolon Catalog & Pricelist (below).

So, I think your rod is a custom version of the Citation 8300-N.

John and Kim,
I just saw John's request to move this discussion to the the rod discussion. I've been busy on a "Honey-Do" list.
I am not too good at some of these kind of moderator duties since I haven't performed this one more than once or twice. I hope that all is there that you wanted.
