Hi jeff1322, I personally don't know of any of the 308 series being painted a dark blue. I do know that different blues were used on the 408 models, which was a high speed 308 among some other differences.A picture of the reel would help and possibly a serial number. It could be a reel that had some parts changed at some time. I'm sure you'll get an answer from one of the other Mates once enough information comes forth. Best regards , John in Pa. :sCh_fisherman:

I have never seen a blue 308. For the longest time 204 & 308 were the only reels I bought. Like John said parts could have swapped out. Or maybe even a total restore with paint. Also like John I'd like to see a photo of it.

May your lines always be tight, Don

Now that I know that I have a 408, are the gears Helical cut?
( did I spell that right ). and the main gear is brass also!

Hi jeff1322, I would say if you took the cover off and you can see the gears are brass ,if they have a curve to them they are helical cut like the ring and pinion in a car rear end.If they come out straight from the center of the gear they are not helical cut. Hope this helps and if they are helical cut you got a fine 408 for I guess what the seller thought was a 308.Fairly good difference in price. Best regards, John in Pa. :sCh_fisherman:

Thanks for the info! Is that the only difference between the 308
and the 408? I'm new to the Mitchell Reel! I have two DAM QUICK reels that I bought in the mid 70's that I still use! I
really like the Mitchell reels thogh.

Jeff, the main gear and pinion gear are the only appreciable variants of the 408 internals to the 308...all other internals are interchangeable...other than exterior cosmetics (paint color, Garcia wedge sticker, high speed sticker), the only other initial difference from the 308 is the crank handle (non-slotted, screw type counterweight), though still interchangeable with the 308...later years brought other minor differences like crank handle dust cover and roller line guide...they are essentially the same reel with high speed gears. The helical gearing design made these reels faster and smoother...probably why they command more today...
