Were the handles for the 300's and 308's the same length?

I got a 330 with a spring loaded handle. When I started looking closer, I thought that the handle looked too short. When I compared it to my 308's spring loaded handle, they were the same length and I started thinking that someone had put a 308 handle on the 330. Later, I thought to compare it to a 300 purchased new by my father in the 1950's and it's handle is the same length.

So, were the handles between these models the same?

Thanks,
J

jr.evansii,
Between 1968 and 1979 part number 81045, HANDLE COMPLETE, fit the following reels: 300, 308, 330, 350, 358, 500.
Kind Regards,

Bill,

I could see that from the schematics. But, what about the pre-1968's? Particularly the spring loaded handles. Were the handles for the 300 series (330, 350, 400, etc) also used on the 308?

Thanks,
J.

J.,
Sorry I do not know.
Hopefully one of our 308 experts will be able to help.

jr, the spring style crank handle is the same handle on the full bail 300 and 308 up until 1967, when both models changed to a screw type handle. Note that early 300 handles had a smooth plastic grip and 308 handles always had a textured plastic grip. Interestingly, the screw type was introduced long before 1967. The 350 had a screw type handle in '50s and the 408 and 400 which were first produced in 1963-64 with only a screw type handle. Note the 400 (torpedo style grip) had a longer crank handle then the 408, though both had screw type. Also, commonly, there are subtle differences in the screw type handles between models and even varying year to year within models.

Hope this helps,
Sandman

Sandman,

That helps a lot, thanks. I guess that since the other size reels (302, 304, & 306) had their own handles, I had anticipated that the 308 would also.

Thanks again,
J.

Jr, even when both the 300 and 308 switched to screw type handles, they used the same screw type. The 308 changed to screw type about serial number 525xxx (1967).

Sandman,

Thanks. It was clear from the schematics that, at least from 1968 on, the handles for the two models had identical part numbers. Having been surprised by the possibility that they might have the same handles, I did not want to assume that was the same before 1968.

J.
