Hello everyone - I'm trying to figure out the age of various types of 308 spools. The bottom of the older spools had 3 small chrome screws holding the spool together. Which came first, the spool with the 3 chrome screws or the spool that had small circles where the 3 chrome screws were going to be placed?

Also, the break springs on the older spools were completely rounded on the edges, the newer model break springs had the indents around the edges. Does anyone know when these changes took place?

Thanks so much for all of your help.

Wbl49, through the 1960's and early '70s all shallow 308 spools came with the three screws at the base of the shell. All deep 308 spools did not come with those screws. Early 308 deep spools had the three round cast marks where the screw holes are on shallow spools that you refer to. Since schematics don't provide that level of detail and spools, and parts thereof, are so easily and commonly interchanged, I can only provide info I have from a few early NIB 308s. These indicate that sometime after 188248 (1962) and before 482419 (1965) the deep spool shell base became smooth, rather than retaining the casting marks where shallow spool screws holes are located.

In terms of the brake springs, again, based on NIB reels, the transition from smooth to indents on the side of each brake arm occurred somewhere between 185380 (1962) and before 482419 (1965). Years are approximate.

Sorry it is not more precise, hope this helps.
Sandman

Thank you so much Sandman, your input is very valuable. But I have come across deep spools with the 3 chrome screws also.
Oh, well, like you said, easy to interchange.
