Dear Laroupane,

Merci beaucoup. You clearly have an outstanding collection of Mitchell advertising.

Would it be possible to see the earliest black and white adverts you have for the Mitchell and CAP reels ?

Cordialement,

Rolands.

Hello,
I have more than 1,400 fisheries journals, but Mitchell or CAP ads are not numerous or nil in the presumed years of Mitchell's birth.
Concerning the CAP, the first reference (I have) is from 1941 where Mr. Jean Huillet shows this reel in his book "The lures light".
The first advertising Mitchell are repetitive, that of July 1949 (2nd model) is the same until March 1950, from April 1950 the advertisement (2nd model + CAP) is the same until December 1950. In 1951 3rd model
Between 1951 and 1953 virtually no advertising.
From 1954 advertisements (in photo) or text announcing a novelty or a milestone for Mitchell.
Luxor, another high-quality French brand, had two advertising pages at the same time, the first reel having been manufactured in 1936. Many other French brands had also many ads, Mitchell was clearly deficient in number of issues in the halieutic press before 1954
In conclusion, the period from 1935 until the end of the war is very little prolific in advertising for what interests us, it should be known that some newspapers halieutiques disappeared during the war to be again published in 1946/1947

Hello Laroupane,

Great advertising :tup . Here are a couple of my favorites from my collection.

This one is from the Outdoor Life Magazine, April 1956. I liked this one so much, I framed it and it hangs on the wall of my reel room.

This one is a pull out that's 5 feet long...Although I love it, I'm not framing this one :sFun_shocked: While not dated, It shows the "New" Abu Garcia 505 so I would place it around 1961 or 62 when the 505 was first offered.

I'm not sure where this one came from but it has great artwork. Perhaps one of the other Mates has seen this and knows of it's origination. More on this one to follow.

Laroupane and Chris, :sSig_thankyou:
These beautiful works of art belong in the MRM. Thank you for posting them. I know Wallace has included some of them (Their images) in the Gallery but those that have not been included, IMHO, should be enshrined for all Mitchell lovers in the future to enjoy. :sFun_oldguy:

Wallace has done a fantastic job with the inclusion of Mitchell items in the MRM and many many individuals have enjoyed them, none more than myself. However, over time, as more items surface, it is my hope that the MRM can grow to include new items as they come forward or at least photographs of them, in order to document their existence and add to our history of Mitchell. :sHa_yes:
Kind Regards,
Bill :tup

Hey Laroupane,

Thank you so much for sharing your Mitchell advertisements from France. At the MRM Forum, we do not often get to see advertising from France – or from broader Europe.

I find most interesting your comment about the Mitchell spinning reel:
Quote:
The first advertising Mitchell are repetitive, that of July 1949 (2nd model) is the same until March 1950, from April 1950 the advertisement (2nd model + CAP) is the same until December 1950.

In comparison, the first US/Charles Garcia advertisements on the Mitchell spinning reel I have been able to find are from February and April, 1949 (which are about the 2nd version).

Hey Chris,

With respect to Laroupane’s thread on Mitchell (France) and diverging from it in the interest of addressing your question about Garcia (USA), I have some images to share (but not a specific answer).

John,
There is some type of issue with the link to this post. I have no idea why. :help:

Bonjour Laroupane,

We are indeed fortunate to have your knowledge available to us. I had already reached the conclusion that the answers to the questions about the birth of Mitchell are to be found in France.

2nd. model Mitchell reels first appearing in adverts in 1949 fits very well with patents being applied for in 1948.

If it is not too much to ask, is it possible that you could show the CAP reel of Mr. Jean Huillet from 1941 ?

I am interested because I have a reel called CAP2 and some paperwork referring to this reel and Jean Huillet. Do you know if he was involved with the design of this reel?

I have shown these images before, but attach photos of the reel and paper. This reel was made before Carpano became involved, I think.

Cordialement,

Rolands.

Hi Mates,

Sorry for mistakenly posting my 1956 and 1961 color Garcia Mitchell Ads in the "Mitchell Color Advertisement From 1955 to 1966" thread. No diverging intended so here's my correct contribution to the "Mitchell Color Advertisement From 1955 to 1966" thread. This is a 1966 French brochure commemorating the 10 Million Mitchell reels manufactured.

Hi mates,
Here is an advertising pamplet that I'm not certain of its date of publication. I hope it falls between 1955 and 1966. Additionally, is a fold out from a Field and Stream from June 1963. The reverse side not pictured are of the same Mitchell Reels as already posted in the earlier 1963 Field and Steam issues.

Hello Dennis2149,

Your pamplet advertising is from 1964.
I bought this same document many years ago. It was sold in Mitchell's mailing envelope to dealers, mailed on May 25, 1964.
This pamplet advertising was sent on the occasion of "Father's Day" as indicated on the envelope "MITCHELL, FETE DES PERES 1964"
Best regards

Hello Roland,

Sorry but I did the scan of Jean Huillet's book, I moved on and I forgot to post the scan!
Jean Huillet designed a reel in 1934. This reel was manufactured by a French mechanical firm. Jean Huillet did not intervene in the design of other reels, so not for the CAP.
He only described the various reels of that time in his book.

Post subject:  Re: Michell color advertisement from 1955 to 1966

Dear Laroupane,

That is fantastic information.

So in 1941 Jean Huillet was showing the very early CAP2 which I think was made by ARM. I have always been puzzled by this, but you have explained the mystery.

This would suggest to me that the later Carpano CAP and also perhaps the early ARM CAP with vertical movement were not yet available 1941.

As always, I am very grateful.

Cordialement,

Rolands.

Two documents for sellers between 1960 and 1963.
The new francs (NF) which replaced the francs (F) were created in 1960, the indication NF was removed in 1963, replaced by F

Some beautiful Mitchell literature there! Thank-you for sharing everyone.

It just goes to prove that we mustn't use Mitchell advertising leaflets for purposes of provenance though......

Did anyone else spot the pre-1960 reel used in a 1966 promotion? The clue is the bail arm locking cut-away....a notch before 1960, which could let you over-stress the spring if you pulled the bail arm open too far. This was changed to a groove that the bail release arm dropped into .... and this also prevented you opening the bail arm too far.

Well, I would know about bail arms, wouldn't I....... :sHa_biggrin:

Post subject:  Re: Michell color advertisement from 1955 to 1966

Hi Bailarm,

Thanks for sharing your observation and info. I was wondering about the timing of the change to a bail arm groove. I recently replaced a very rusty bail arm and toothed trip lever on a 1950's era Mitchell 300 for a family member and fortunately the majority of my NOS bail arms are of the pre-1960's type.

Best regards, Dennis
