Post subject:  Dating a Mitchell 300 between 1959-60

Hi, New to website and interested in the Mitchell vintage reels.

I have an opportunity to buy a vintage 300.
Serial number is #2976240

When I check the serial numbers on file here, I see ranges of
1959: ending in #2959786
1960: begins #3067452

So the reel in question is in between the serial numbers listed.

Do I have a somewhat rare or unknown find?

More importantly, what is the year?

Thanks
Jeff

Hello iceratz, and :sSig_welcome4: to the Mitchell Reel Museum.

The answer to your dating/serial number question is mentioned in the dating guide prelude, "Gaps between the serial numbers I give are ones I’ve not found and documented. Therefore these gaps in serial numbers could be the years before or after". Your reel could be either a '59 or '60. This alone does not make it rare, nor does it help that the 300 was the most produced model. That said, if it is in unused condition with matching serial number box and original paperwork, it does have good value.

Hello iceratz, Welcome to the Mitchell Reel Museum and winning your first auction for a Mitchell reel. Once you get the bug it's almost impossible to stop ( just ask my wife ) . In time to come it will become like an albatross that you can't get rid of, and other times it will calm your mind and spirit and bring you inner peace. Good luck if you are going to make it a hobby. Regards John in Pa.

I think the issues that are debated are useful for dissemination.

A Mitchell reel doesn't have to be rare to enjoy them. I my opinion the Mitchell is the work horse of all reels. If you target different fish you might want to get a Mitchell for said fish. Their is so much information on this suite. You can pick up reels cheep be it at yard sales, flea market, ebay etc. Many just need a cleaning, some a little more. Take a look at the video on youtube that Wallace made, cleaning a 300. I think you'll soon be taking them apart, and have some very good reels. Good luck and welcome to the world of the Mitchell reel :sCh_fisherman: :tup
