The Mitchell was the most copied reel in the world, mostly by Japanese companies. In order to study Mitchell, we need to know about known fakes better described as look-a-likes. The ones shown are mine; imagine what "prototype" reels could be made from these! ![]() Here's some of the 300 series look-a-likes made: Olympic 81 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Devil No.21 - speak of the devil! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Raichell (must be Mit-chell's sister) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() International 100 (Yes it's green and a half bail) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Mitchell 302 series was also copied as well. I know of one man who I think owns them all, will he post them here I hope? I also have a couple 304 series look-a-likes, somewhere! Cheers, Wallace |

This may not qualify but here goes. I think it is interesting that Montgomery Wards had a Look-A-Like spinning reel. Too bad I don't have the reel for this box. It says Made in Japan on the box lable and Printed in Japan on the parts sheet. Note the price of $6.88 - so this package is quite old. The reel pictured is obviously a 300 copy. If anybody has the reel please send it to me! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Wallace, The Olympic 81 you pictured here is an exact duplicate of mine. However the Raichell, Mitch's sister LOL, that I have differs in that the label on mine is an engraved, raised metal sticker. looks like yours has the name engaved on the reel. Randy ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Wallace, Interesting that your International has the turned Alum knob. I guess that makes mine a "Fourth Version" Transition model, with half bail and smooth plastic knob on the spring loaded handle. All else looks the same including the very small Japan on the ribbed foot. I was not aware of the Elite. Something else to look for!!! Randy ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Mates, I recently found a different version of the Raichell . It has an indent with Raichell engraved or imprinted in it. The one above has a metal tag attached with Raichell on it. Add to the pile! Randy ![]() ![]() |

Montgomery Ward had a number of spinning reels sold as Hawthorne e.g. 60-6368, 60-6369, 60-6436, etc This type of numbering is typically used by Montgomery Ward. JP |

The green International 100 pictured here was designed by Seiko to be a near exact copy of the earliest iteration of Series 3 Mitchell with added features like line holder clip and lube ports. This counterfeiting job was so close that most of the parts are perfectly interchangeable with the Mitchell! The handle shown here on rng1966's photo is NOT the original, which is indeed an aluminum knob like the Early Series 3. One of the distinguishing features of the Seiko clone spring loaded handle is that it's very flat on the end so that a side view yields a much sharper edge profile around the perimeter. The one in the photo is more beveled, giving a rounder appearance to the profile view. This is actually a Mitchell handle, which fits perfectly on the Seiko clones like this 100. The handle pictured in Wallace's photo of the 100 is correct. One must examine these Seiko clones carefully for such substitutions. Most common ones are Mitchell handles and Mitchell spools, both which fit perfectly on the early Seiko clones. The spools are easy to spot because of the markings on the Mitchell drag knobs (the Seiko drag knobs are completely unmarked) and a minor variation in the geometry of the spool lip. |

BTW, it's difficult on my monitor to see from rng1966's photos, but it appears that the spool is black. If so, it is not the original spool either, but a substitution. Both small and large capacity spools for the International 100 should be green like the body. Please also note that the first Olympic 81 from Seiko was the exact same reel as the 100 except painted in black like the Mitchell, and so even if the spool knob has no markings, if it's black, it's not an original 100 spool. |
