Found a nearly new 300 Japan but the bail spring is missing. The bail is a 2 part but where the spring sets into the bail does not have a hole like my other 300's (not made in Japan), how do I know where to place the end to obtain tension on the bail?

jlslavey,
I am not sure what you mean by a "300 Japan". Is it a Mitchell 300 made in Japan? That would be really unique and I would love to see some photos of it.
If it is a reel that is similar to a Mitchell 300, but made by another company, then could you please identify the name of the manufacturer for us.
Please consider posting some photographs of the reel showing both sides and especially the bail spring area to help us help you.
Kind Regards,
Bill :tup

It has been awhile since I worked on one of those, but I think you can see the bail is molded different at about 4 o'clock. Different from the "spokes" on it at 8 and !2 o'clock. The part of the bail wire that normally goes in the hole goes here, I think on the upper side of this. The housing is different also and a Normal one piece bail wire with the pin sticking out on the back won't work. There are a few later 300's that had one piece bail wires without the pin sticking out on the back. Try putting your bail spring in the "slot' there at 4 o'clock and see if it works.
