Help I have a Mitchell 308 that I picked up at a garage sell. It works great except that the bail actuator stays open and will not lock the bail open. I took the bail off to find that the screw holding the spring and the actuator in place was very very loose. I dont know how it is to go back together? I have the schematic. But it is got clear. Does anyone have a clear blow up picture of the proper condition or any advise. All the parts are there and not broken. The reel will work fine, if I can properly put it together. Thanks.

Greetings tkcenterline,
Welcome to the Mitchell Reel Museum.
Is this what you looking for?. It's a later model, but the pics show the bail trip.

Got it working. Now the problem is who ever had it was forcing it open because the actuator became loose. So the actual bail where the notch is located at the actuator is worn down so that it will not stay open. There is hardly a notch at at all. Where can I pick up a bail.

You can find those bails on ebay...the kind with a notch are harder to find...later versions did not have a notch (and easier to find - similar to the one in Ted's photo), but rather a stop built into the backside, which eliminates the problem your having with the trip lever staying into the notch...I've resolved this problem by tweaking the trip lever very slightly...though yours may not be solved this way if the notch is tuly worn down too much...I've worked with many old version bails that have seen lots of use and never had one where I couldn't tweak the trip lever to get it to hold...

Hi tkcenterline, If the notch is in bad shape already maybe you can use a small narrow file to cut it a little deeper so you can use it until you get another one. Regards John in Pa. :sCh_fisherman:

My apologies, My statement above about newer versions not having a notch for the trip lever and the built in stop on the back side eliminating the need for a notch, is incorrect. I was thinking of something else. All versions have a notch for the trip lever and therefore any version will work. That said, as I stated above, tweaking trip levers will often solve this problem too.

Hi tkcenterline, You've gotten two answers from Mates and I'm sure either one may get your reel back in commission , maybe a little of both will work. That's the great thing about being a Mitchell fisherman , when you have a problem it can almost always be taken care of at a minimal cost because the reels are indestructible to start with, not like a lot of the inferior tackle sold on the market today.
