Attempted to obtain 300/400/410 shims from Mitchell, but don't have enough information. P/Ns 81012, 81024 and 81047 are all still available (55¢ ea), but there is no way to identify what thickness(es) will be received without some sort of further part number designation / suffix. Anyone encountered this problem, found a solution ? Any suggestions appreciated

Greetings nunc,
:sSig_welcome4: to the Mitchell Reel Museum.

I, personally, haven't heard of that problem, but then I haven't tried to order shims.
I'm curious, are you needing shims for all of three different shim points? Are you needing them for multiple reels, or just a couple reels?

Regards,
Ted Lanham

nunc,
One of our excellent shimming experts goes by the name of "Smead". I suggest you do a search for his posts which I have found to be quite excellent on shimming. Also, try searching
"shims" or "shimming" and you will find many useful posts which should give you all the information you will need and then some!
Kind Regards,

No immediate need for any specific reel, looking for the variety in preparation of past due tune–ups on several family beaters a la Smead's superb tutorials. Would like to hear them purr again.

PS: FWIW, if I can obtain all three thicknesses, looking to get approx half a dozen or so of each. Otherwise, would like a dozen or so of the 0.10mm so I can stack them up, that should get me within a couple of thousandths

I get the impression the auction site is likely to be my best option

Thanks,
nunc

To approach the same question from a slightly different direction, does anyone know, or know where to find the ID and OD of 81012, 81024 and 81047 shims … ?

Thanks for your Patience !

nunc,
Sorry, you didn't get an instant reply, but I'm like a junkyard mechanic. I have an old tackle box with a lot of various parts, and one tray has shims in it. If I need one I find one that works and use it. I'm also not one of the metric generation, so I had to find a ruler with cm/mm on it.
Here's my best shot:

81047 Pinion gear shim= 8mm outside, 5mm inside.
81024 Head to housing shim= 10mm outside, 8mm inside.
81012 Baffle plate shim= 14mm outside, 8mm inside.

A mate named Smead could give you these specs off the top of his head. I miss Smead. Of course, if anyone can confirm this
info., I'd appreciate it.

Hope this helps,
Ted Lanham

Post subject:  Re: Brass Shims … thicknesses

I have been learning about this too...

Apparently at least some of the various shims come in three different thicknesses....

.10 .15 and .20

When you order shims, you may need to tell them which thicknesses you want.

You may have already known this...
