I picked up a 300 yesterday and for a 1959 model it works very well, except when I turn the handle I noticed that it made a clicking noise. I took the spool out and it looks like the bail trip lever is hitting on the buffer plate.
Is this part of the buffer suppose to be turned down like this?
because this is were it is hitting.

Thanks for your help.

Hey strangms,
I think this may be a routine problem that you run into.
Here's a link to a string that concerns some great information.

Here is a up date to my problem with the 300 making the clicking noise.
After turning the handle a million times I noticed that the pick up bail spring lever looked to be bent outwards.
My neighbor was 2 Mitchell 300's, so I went to see him this morning. After looking at his reels, mine lever was bent.
This was causing the lever to hit on the part of the baffle that trips the bail every time the handle was turned.
I took it apart and put the lever in a vice with a piece of wood on both sides and tapped it till it was straight enough.
Put it back together and it works like a charm.
the first picture is before I fixed the lever.

How to load some line on her and take her for a spin..........
