I just cleaned and serviced an old 302 that belonged to my father in preparation for this season. Although it hasn't been used in 20+ years it is smooth as silk. I read an article concerning casting knots do to the planetary gear wind. Installing a crosswind cam is easy enough and they seem to be available in several places. I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with casting problems with the original wind system. I don't mind the "upgrade", but want it to be a necessary mod. Since the spool is now empty I'd like to address this issue before I proceed any further.

Hi,

With the crosswind cam the the motion(oscilation) of the spool is different .
To my opinion the cam is better when making a lot of ''long'' casts'.
For spinning I prefer the ''planamatic'' system.
I don't have much experience with the salt water reels but i have with the 308 and 358 .
Maybe other mates have a different point of view or opinion .

regards, Dries

You get great level line lay with the planatary gears this is great for mono.Crosswind cam does what it says crossing the line as it goes around spool shell. This is an advantage with braid as it keeps line from digging in
