I grew up on the NJ shore, in 1972 at the age of 15 I bought my first reel with summer job money - a mitchell 387.  It was mounted on a 10 ft wright and mcgill surf rod and caught many a bluefish. I've since learned the 386/7 was more or less a marketing flop among east coast surf fishermen, I enjoyed mine very much. It was an oddity in a sea of mitchell 302's and Penn greenies. The 386/7 were dependable and except for the paint finish, it held up well.  Mine sat in a closet from about 1980 thru 2005. I moved to the FL west coast where's there's not alot of demand for surf spinners. I sold it to a friend, another lefty, about 5 years ago, it was still going fine.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for sharing your story,  glad you were able to get what you needed out of your reel.  Those Mitchell reels are just like a Timex watches, they never stop spinning.  Cheers !

Regards,  Scott
