I noticed reel spools don"t fit in earlier reels won't lock into place if they do are hard to remove. next observation the tension spring on the drag is made different on newer spools. third, some spools hit bail when fully extended. could someone enlighten me on spools? Most of the schematics show the same type of drag retention spring. had on that didn't function took apart and spring was upside down. This is starting to get fun again, all I know is I catch fish with them. always am looking for old school rods to go with them.

Schrack,
I, occasionally, have a spool that is difficult to remove, but I always have written it off as a case of being worn a bit after many years of use. Never had one that I couldn't remove.
I have had a reel or two that needed the bail adjusted a little to keep from hitting the fully extended spool.
When you ask about the later drag retention springs, what years are you talking about? I'm not real observant, but I never noticed a great difference up through the late 70's.

Would assume this is what the shims four the front part of reel come in, (come in packs of three) this is where they come into play. just purchased 5 more reels four are early ,4 and 5. clean em and take em to lake and they perform super.

Yes their does appear to be a size difference, from 55,56 it looks like larger ones are from later years, most of them have the tri cover, no the quad.
