Post subject:  A couple of 308 questions

I just got my 308 back in working order with a 2121 rod I had as a kid. I’m wondering if you guys use braided line or fluorocarbon? I was thinking 5 lb braid?

I also have 2 spools for this reel, one has a small number 3 on it and the other has a small 0? Any idea what that means?

Thanks in advance

GlennM.

I saw that you had not received a reply and thought that I could take a shot. Maybe my reply will prompt someone more knowledgeable to step in.

You mentioned a 2121 rod. Is that the 5' Ultra Light Conolon rod? The 1960 ad suggests 1/16 - 1/4 oz. lure with 3/4 - 6 lb. test line

I keep my Mitchell 308 on an ultra light rod (wish I had a Conolon.) I have both small and large capacity spools. I keep them spooled with monofilament, 4lb. test of the small and 6 lb. on the large, just in case I see an opportunity to go after something a little larger. 99% of the time it's the 4 lb. test. Monofilament is cheap, readily available, buoyant, and does the job. Mostly, I really prefer the way it comes off of the spool. I don't have any real experience with fluorocarbon yet.

Are the numbers that you are talking about on the back, or underside of the spools? I think that those are likely a mold mark or production indicator. If I take one of my spools apart, each of the molded parts (spindle, spool, drag knob) has a similar, but different number.

Glenn,
I fish in the NE section of the USA. Freshwater I mainly fish for stocked trout 1-5 lb. For this I use Pline fluorocarbon coated line 4 lb. When fishing saltwater inshore I use braid, with a Pline fluorocarbon leader. Test of the line depends on fish targeted.
I have found Pline to be less expensive than most fluorocarbon lines, and love it!
As for braided line I use to use Pro Line, the last couple years I have been using Hercules braid. It's a knock off of Pro Line, found on ebay. It's 1/2 the price and works as good or better than Pro Line.
While Pline has a low memory, I load my spools with the line in water. This take more memory out.
Check out this youtube video Mastering P-Line.
It explains all their lines.
I believe I catch more fish using fluorocarbon line!!!
Hope this helps.
