Hello Mates,

I got this Mitchell 308 first version from France with s.n 089274
It shows pressmarks and the ''F'' (Fr0nce) is pressed off.
The engraving is 4mm to the back end of the reel.
Both ends of the foot have been reshaped round and the reel is repainted but very well done

What could be the story behind this reel ?

best regards

Hey Dries, interesting...the engraving looks typical of a Prince reel. 308 is engraved at middle height of Mitchell.

The groove from what looks like a press or milling machine where the F is missing looks like a unique factory defect...as you know, in this era, defects were not too uncommon and seemed to make it into circulation.

The repainting is interesting...makes me wonder if it was repainted by the factory because of the defect and then sold as a factory defect at a discounted price. Don’t know if they did that.

Dries,
It's always a pleasure to view one of your posts, and this one isn't an exception. The thing I noticed first the handle shaft looks to have turned on a lathe. I wonder if someone had plans to make a custom handle that would fit over the handle shaft???????? Sounds crazy, but just a thought.

Regards,
Ted Lanham

Hello Chris and Ted,

Thanks for your replies ,I still wonder what happened to this reel
Maybe it didn,t pass the quality control and was it thrown into the trashcan where someone took it out, painted the reel ,engraved it and took it home ..
Just my thoughs

regards

Dries

Hey Dries, thanks for the photos...I looked through my early 308s...found one with same engraving (reel on the right in both photos, Prince - 043424)...the others in the photos are just for comparison...0009261 and 034677 - Garcia.

I have no explanation... as to why these are engraved further to the right...

You're welcome Dries...I have over 30 FRONCE reels and this is the only one like that...the only correlation I can see between yours and mine is they are both Prince reels...though they are quite far apart in serial numbers and I have other Prince reels in between these two that are not like this...still a mystery...
