I am looking at another GM Match reel, and when I looked at the picture of the reel foot, the only numbers stamped are either 720 or 780, I can't quite tell for sure.
It's not like there are other numbers that are there but hard to see, and the numbers that are on it are very crisp and legible.
I don't know if it matters or not but the reel is in the U.K.
The reel looks to be very correct, and it is clean, but looks like it hasn't been used much.

I was wondering if anyone knew if there is any significance to
just having three numbers on the foot ? My first thought was that it was a replacement housing, but if I remember correctly, the replacement housings don't have any numbers on them.

Thanks
Mike

Mike 408,
Can't think of a reason for just 3 characters, other than either a reel produced in the mid 80's, or Mitchell's bad stamping.

Is it a later reel with the reinforced neck?

Hi Ted,

It's definitely an early version with the original style housing.
I looked at the pictures again as closely as I could and there definitely are no other numbers. The paint on the foot is very good and only has a couple spots on the edges where the paint has chipped off. It looks deliberate because the three numbers are centered on the foot.

I'm reasonably certain none of the parts have been changed because while there is very little wear on the reel, it appears the colors on the housing, side plate and rotor housing all match,
and have aged equally.

If I end up getting it I will definitely post pictures, and hopefully someone will be able to figure it out.

It might be a new Mitchell mystery :sHa_biggrin:

It will be interesting to see where the reel ends up. Ironically about an hour and a half after I first posted this thread, someone asked the seller to verify the numbers and mentioned to them it was somewhat rare, and it picked up more watchers.
Guess I should have waited until it was over before I asked the question.
