I am in process of acquiring 2 Mitchell 306's. Have a question about the sn. First sn. is E02010 and second is 679179. I know the 679179 is a later 306 but the first one has me perplexed. I have not seen the reels yet. Can anyone give me some info, thanks.

Hi rubiconrambler, In 1971 mitchell went to a new ser. No system with the number starting with a new letter each year , 1971-A, 1972-B, 1973-C and so on which makes your E reel a 1975. I'm not sure but I believe the other one is earlier .Im fairly sure one way to tell is by the different handles, if you check in the gallery you'll see what I mean. If any thing I said is wrong I'm sure some other mate will give you better info. Best regards, John in Pa. :sCh_fisherman:

The E serial number is even later...about 1975....Mitchell adopted an alpha-numeric serial number system in 1971 beginning with A...so E places the reel in 1975...the earlier (679xxx) reel is in the mid-sixties, or so...

Edit: I was posting the above the same time John did...he just beat me to it... :sHa_biggrin:

Thanks, I knew that Mitchell went to lettering system in the 70's but wasn't sure the 306's were part of that. Also I am acquiring from same guy a reel called a Marque Deposee Brevette SGDG half bail that is blue green in color. I have never heard of that one, anyone have any info please, thanks.
