Wondering what the conceptual difference is between cross-wind and level-wind.

What is the difference in the gears between the two? I looked at the schematics and they look the same.

Mitchell1965,
If you look closely at the 1954 Mithell 300 schematic, found at the "Schematic link" at the top of the page, there are both a parts 25 and 25C, and a parts 31 and 31C on that schematic are are good representations of the actual gears. The "C" parts are crosswind. Also, here's a link to a pic of the crosswind gears, but I haven't been able to find a comparable of levelwind gears.

Thanks Ted. I have an early 3rd version half bail. Can i just switch out the gears to change it to crosswind from level wind?

Mitchell1965,
I haven't, personally, done this, but I believe that the two gear change over does the trick.
