I have a Mitchell 396 that has four (4) screws and not three (3), plus it has a stainless steel side plate. I assume this is a salt water reel, judging by it's size. It also has a round knob type handle. It has a letter "T" stamped just inside the spool housing under France.
My question is is this a rare Mitchell or was it common to manufacture these 396's with four screws instead of the customary three, plus the stainless steel plates and hardware?

Hi billypocono, Welcome to the Mitchell Reel Museum. If you go to the schematics section of the museum ,and bring up 396s you'll see that they are all 4 screw covers. They are not part of your typical egg shaped 3 screw cover group. It is a larger reel used for surf or ocean fishing. Regards John in Pa.
