Mitchell 300 Spring Question

Post by Ted Lanham »

Mates,
I had a conversation with a fellow recently when the subject of M300 reels came up. He said he hated the reel because the bail springs kept braking. I told him that I had fished with the same 300 for decades and had never had a broken spring. I did, occasionally, have to make some adjustments to the bail, and once in while I'd put a fresh spring in if I thought it had weakened, but never anything like his experiences.
Have you guys had a lot of broken springs?

Regards,
Ted Lanham

Hi Ted,
Like you, I have never had a problem with bail springs. I have replaced one or two after 20 years or so of constant use, but other than that there are none better. :banana-dance:

If someone told me that they were having bail spring problems, I would want to know if:
1. Are you using the right part? Make sure you replace the spring with the correct part numbered spring.
2. Are you sure you are installing it correctly?
3. How much maintenance do you perform on it annually? If you are doing a lot of salt water fishing do you remove all salt from the spring and lubricate it after every use?

Just my :twocents-02cents:
Kind Regards,
Bill :D
