Egg shaped reel dating

Post by Crappie54 »

Hi folks, I have a question pertaining to reel dating. If I am understanding the info Wallace put out, any egg shaped reel i.e. 300, 330, 350, 400, etc follows the same serial numbering system. Having said that I bought a 4-0-0 with a serial number of 4043796 on the foot. When I look on the dating chart it comes up as 1961 manufacture date. Then I look at the production dates it says they started making the 400 reels in 1963. I'm not sure which year my reel was made.

Crappie,

You are off to a good start by recognizing that there is a glaring inconsistency in the dating information you cited.

Rest assured the 400 and 401 model reels were first mass produced in 1963. I recommend that you use this information as the benchmark for dating your reel.

The earliest 400 model reel where I have a picture of the serial number is 3630247. I also have records of slightly earlier serial number 400 reels but don't wish to cite them since I have not seen them with my own eyes.
