According to Wallace's book they started putting the heart shaped pawl in the spools about the same time they started putting serial numbers on the 3rd versions. That was around 1949/1950. They continued unchanged till the 5th versions were produced.
They aren't that common, but far from being rare. I, even, have a couple in my spare parts box.
