Do you put any kind of Lube on them?
I would think doing that would cause slippage.
I am asking this because a guy here at work says he lubed drag parts.
Any thoughts on this matter?

Hi Schrak, I have a 300 reel that appears to never have been used. The spools still have the Garcia-Bonnyl bands holding the line in place. Both spools show signs of being oiled. I've often thought that oil or grease on drag washers was counter intuitive also, but have learned that for the drag washers to perform and last, they need some lubrication. My reel is a newer one as made in France Mitchells go. It's serial # is 6150698 and is encased in it's reddish brown plastic case. It's the nicest Mitchell I own. Hope this Helps.

Ed, would be interesting in seeing your plastic reel case. Is it square or roundish? Normally would be 2 piece black and red case with yellow plastic piece that holds the reel inside. Mitchell did make one that sounds like yours for the 330 that had a paper label on the side that resembled a fish.

Kim, Please excuse the off color of my cell phone photos. I'm afraid the case isn't as red as seeing it in person.

Thanks for the pictures. The case is actually brown. I have several like that. Mine was sent to me with a 440 in it which I think is wrong. Other people here have more knowledge on these kits than me. Nice kit and looks original. I believe it is missing some lures and snap swivels plus booklet.

It's missing a lot of the original stuff. I'm pretty sure I know where it came from. It was Christmas gift to a friend many years ago that never really got used as he wasn't a Mitchell fan. He gave the spool cases away. He showed me the reel back before I was 20 yrs. old. I just turned 70, lol. Unfortunately, he passed away a few years back and the reel ended up at the local consignment auction where I purchased it.

That is a nice case. Of course, I have never seen one like it, but that doesn't say much................

I have Garcia Annuals and paperwork and remember seeing these kits in them. As time permits today between weekend house work and the snow we are about to receive I will search for it.

Kim, Would like to know just what belongs in these kits. I understand your weather issues, as I have that problem also. Snow with some fierce winds.
Should be back to normal for March around the middle of the week. No rush on seeing the kit. Thanks in advance.

I checked my Garcia Annuals. 1st mentioned and picture 1966. 1965 last time picture for black tackle box. Listed up to and in 1971. After that no picture or mention. Garcia listed them as tackle boxes and not kits.

Kim,
As I understand it, Garcia dropped the black tackle box kits around 65/66, but then the brown box could be purchased complete with 300, yellow plastic reel support, small plastic box with lures, spools of fishing line, reel wrench, extra spool and assorted paperwork. I don't recall that the brown ones were labeled as K-kits, but they could be ordered complete. Garcia also sold the brown boxes completely empty. I believe that if a brown box has the yellow plastic reel support that it was originally a complete "kit". I'm sure Chris Shannon has, at least, one.
The old museum had many pictures of these, and how I wish they were still available.

Ted, I will have to recheck my annuals. There may have been more writing below the picture to show them available as a kit. There was a picture that had the yellow insert but was too much in a hurry seeing the duration of being offered. Plus, I know I did purchase a KIT with contents and reel but didn't look for it. Buried in my piles of Mitchells. Thanks.

Hmmm..... #2 seems to have more small compartments than the one I have. Thanks for posting the photos!.

Ed

EDIT: I've looked at mine and it appears to have some missing panels.
