I do not get concerned about bail wires, only where the screw and line catch is, they normally do not have effect on line just guide it.
I have some nasty ones that function normal.
Have not cut or damaged line.

What about drag.
If you changed it back drag would be incorrect.

Sounds like they made it more trouble than what it was worth.

Winding backwards would mess me up.
From whar you say, they used a 302 drive gear which would drive back wards.
If you can find a 303 drive gear it might work.
That's one I don't have.

Making WAG it might be 302 drive gear if installed on a 301 would turn back wards. So that would be my WAG (Wild Ass Guess) more Air Force slang.LOL

If it is 6 numbers it would be from 1953 up to mid block 1955. Do not know exact month in 55 numbers hit 7 digits. The Reel would be 1954.
Someone along the way changed the left case which is from a later model reel.
Is their any marking on spools?

Cool, I' be been wondering about this sticker. I have several earlier with just Mitchell on them that has or had a sticker. My guess is 1954 to maybe 1956. Normally the C would precede the number and be Large Case Letter.

I would think doing that would cause slippage.

Sound like you need to shim it up, over time it wears . Plate is striking trip lever. 81012 Does Rotating head have any lateral movement? I use the 300 (53 thru 56) for larger fish and the 304 for smaller but can handle up to 10# without a problem.
Bought my first 300 in 1956 when I was 10, have not found any other as good.

My mistake when reel is on rod Mitchell will be upside down and drag lever also.
Even with that it is a nice Reel.

Used same mounting point to install 300 bail wire and screws, after modifying works like it was made for the Reel
.Have landed some nice ones with it.

Did some research, 300A has a different set up inside, Gears such as Pinion Gear is alot digger and functions the same.
Bail is definitely different , but looks easy to work on.
